History

Darwaza-I-Rauza by Ankush Dawar

This page and the links over here catalogue my journey, exploring the Indian sub-continent, mostly through the written word. Over the last 15 years I have had the privilege of reading texts written by some of the most accomplished writers of Indian history and in many cases the history makers themselves. These texts have opened my eyes, helped me learn more about the Indian sub-continent, the diversity of its people, the richness of its culture, its colorful traditions, breadth of its history, the countless rulers (past and present) who ruled it, etc.

When the Colonial British took over India (Historically it would have been the Battle of Plassey, 1757 when the East India Company wrestled the richest State of India Bengal from the hands of Siraj Ud Daulah . Source – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_India_Company) India as a sub-continent was rich, it contributed ~23% of the worlds GDP (Gross Domestic Produce). When the Colonial British departed they left India in ruins, left behind a state whose subjects were impoverished, malnourished, uneducated. India at that point (1947) struggled to put out ~2% of the worlds GDP. Today India is large, thriving, fractious democracy soon to become the fourth largest economy in terms of GDP (Gross Domestic Produce). The diversity of its culture, the richness of its tradition, the ability of its people to accommodate (new ways of thinking, new cultures, new traditions, etc.), the depth of its thinking and most importantly the resiliency of its people never stops to amaze me. This page is my attempt to catalogue some of the interesting texts, videos to share some of that awe with you.
